We have a story to share with you about a sweet dog who now has a second chance at life ...
We received a call from a family in Immokalee. Their dog, Sassy, had been allowed to run loose, as so many of them are, and had been hit by a car, as so many of them have. This family actually took the extra step, did the right thing, and took sassy to the vet, and had the wound cleaned and stitched. They also got pain medication and antibiotics to prevent infection. But then they brought sassy home, and kept her in her cage outside while she was healing, and they also didn’t give her the medication. So between the unsanitary conditions of living outside, the heat, and the lack of pain pills and antibiotics, Sassy got very sick. They took her back to the vet or they were told she had a very bad infection and would need hospital stay and more care.
And that is when they called us. They could no longer afford to take care of her, and they surrendered to us. We are so glad they did because Sassy was on the brink of death. We immediately picked her up and took her to Emergency Pet Hospital on Dudley Dr in Naples. Dr. Madison and the staff there stabilized her and performed surgery to remove all of the infected skin. A huge thank you to Dr Madison and his team for taking such good care of her. After a few nights at the hospital, she moved into foster care at Tom‘s house. She needed around the clock care, daily wound cleaning, as well as antibiotics and pain medication. She spent the evenings with Tom at his home, and spent her days at our Snip Collier Low Cost Clinic, where she was taken care of and treated daily by our incredible staff.
After three weeks, Sassy was ready to go to a forever home, and as luck would have it, we were able to play matchmaker again. Through our volunteer network (thank you to Tricia and Damian), we found out about a woman whose dog had just passed away and she was heartbroken. She was looking to give a new animal a loving home, and mend her broken heart. She heard about Sassy and she knew this was the dog for her. Sassy’s wound was almost fully healed but Susan, her new mom, was ready to bring her home and continue her care. And she did.
When they met, It was love at first sight. Her new name is Dottie, and she is living her best life with her Susan. They are inseparable. Dottie is now completely healed and infection free, and so loved. As Susan said so perfectly. “Dottie is my true little savior, thanks to Tom and SNIP Collier!”
This event was scheduled for Memorial Day weekend.
Due to COVID-19 it was rescheduled to Saturday October 3rd. Last year's event had upwards of 600 plus participants. Because of the Virus we have taken every possible precautions and limited the 5K run to only 150 runners 🏃♂️.
We greatly appreciate all the time, effort and support everyone has given to make this a successful event.
We look forward for the SNIP COLLIER/GULF COAST 6th Annual 5K in 2021.
